This Renaissance fresco depicts the calling of the Apostles by Jesus, a foundational moment in Christianity. Although the scene itself is religious, it takes place within the broader context of the Roman Empire, where this new faith first emerged and gradually spread. The first disciples, coming from modest backgrounds, are called to follow Jesus and carry his message. This event marks the beginning of a religious movement that, despite early persecutions, would spread throughout the Empire and eventually become its official religion centuries later.
