Arminius à la bataille de la forêt de Teutobourg

Arminius à la bataille de la forêt de Teutobourg

Peter Jannsen · Domaine public

This painting depicts Arminius (Hermann), a Germanic leader, during the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9. A former auxiliary in the Roman army, Arminius was well acquainted with Roman tactics. He ambushed the legions of General Varus in difficult forest terrain, leading to the destruction of three Roman legions. This major defeat deeply shocked Rome and marked a strategic turning point: the Empire largely abandoned its ambitions to conquer lands beyond the Rhine. The event symbolizes the resistance of Germanic tribes against Roman expansion.
