This painting depicts the meeting between Julius Caesar and the Germanic leader Ariovistus in Alsace in 58 BC, on the eve of a decisive confrontation. After establishing dominance over part of eastern Gaul, Ariovistus becomes a threat to Gallic peoples allied with Rome. Caesar tries to impose a diplomatic solution, but the encounter reveals extreme tension between the two leaders. Confident in his strength, Ariovistus refuses to submit, while Caesar asserts Roman authority. The scene symbolises the failure of negotiations and foreshadows the battle that will lead to Ariovistus’s defeat and the retreat of Germanic forces beyond the Rhine.
