This painting stages a clash between Romans and Gauls, evoking the many conflicts that opposed the two peoples during Rome’s conquest of Gaul. The Roman soldiers, disciplined and protected by heavy armour, face more mobile and daring Gallic warriors, often depicted with little protection but great ferocity in combat. Évariste‑Vital Luminais—nicknamed the “painter of the Gauls”—aims less to reconstruct a specific battle than to convey the heroic imagination surrounding France’s ancient origins. The dynamic, violent scene highlights the brutality of ancient warfare and the contrast between Roman military rigour and the warlike momentum attributed to Gallic peoples.
