Childeric III: A Façade King (743–751)

Pepin the Short: From Real Power to the Crown (741–768) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

In 743, Pepin and Carloman reinstall a Merovingian king: Childeric III. This is not a Merovingian “return to power”, but a political solution.

🏛️ A monarchy useful… without commanding

The king serves to:

  • give an appearance of continuity
  • legitimise decisions taken by the mayors of the palace
  • calm some opposition by restoring a familiar framework

Real power remains in Pippinid hands.

🧠 A sign of the shift

If a king can be put back in place without recovering power, it means the decision centre has moved. Between 743 and 751, Childeric III embodies the end of a world: Merovingian kingship survives as a symbol, but it no longer governs.
