747: Carloman Withdraws

p4

Pepin the Short: From Real Power to the Crown (741–768) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

In 747, Carloman withdraws from political life. This departure changes the balance of power: Pepin becomes the sole decision centre in the Frankish kingdom.

⚖️ An internal turning point

As long as Pepin and Carloman govern together, Pippinid legitimacy rests on a shared order and collective rule. When Carloman steps aside, Pepin must assume alone:

  • war and border security
  • arbitration among the great
  • the staging of legitimacy

🧠 What it prepares

After 747, the next step becomes possible: if one man already governs, why keep a Merovingian king who does not decide?
