In 879, the death of Louis the Stammerer further weakens the Carolingian balance. In this context, some great men try to turn their power into sovereignty. Boso (often called Boso of Provence) is one of the most striking examples.
Boso is a leading aristocrat, embedded in the networks of power. Taking advantage of succession uncertainty, he has himself recognised as king in the South. The episode marks a turning point: the idea that a “king” must necessarily be a Carolingian loses force, at least locally.
