935: Hungarians in Champagne and Burgundy

p4

Rudolph of Burgundy: King of the Franks Between Princes and Normans (923–936) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

In the mid‑10th century, a new agent of violence appears in the West: the Hungarians (often called Magyars). Their raids come from the East, strike fast and far, then retreat with booty and hostages.

🐎 Raids from the East

In the 930s, these incursions reach Champagne and Burgundy. The danger is less occupation than repeated shocks: fires, plunder, abductions, and pressure on local defence networks.

🛡️ 935: a rout

In 935, Rudolph manages to rout the raiders. The victory does not definitively end the risk, but it brings respite: the kingdom is temporarily spared from the major invasion waves.

🧠 Key takeaways

  • The Hungarians embody a new kind of threat: fast and far‑reaching.
  • Defence depends on regional coalitions as much as on the king.
  • 935 brings respite, without a return to full security.
