La mort de César

Vincenzo Camuccini · Domaine public

This painting depicts the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BC, during the Ides of March. Surrounded by conspirators, including Brutus and Cassius, Caesar is stabbed in the heart of the Senate. The plotters claimed they were defending the Republic against a man who had become too powerful. This event marks a major turning point in Roman history: instead of restoring the Republic, it triggered a series of civil wars that ultimately led to the rise of the Roman Empire under Augustus.
