Portrait d’Henri Ier de France

Merry-Joseph Blondel · Domaine public

This portrait depicts Henry I of France, who reigned from 1031 to 1060 and was the son of Robert II the Pious. His reign took place during a time when royal authority remained fragile in the face of powerful feudal lords. Henry I had to deal with internal conflicts as well as the rising power of Normandy. Despite these challenges, he helped maintain the continuity of the Capetian dynasty. This portrait portrays a ruler facing the difficulties of a kingdom still in formation.
