888: Compiègne and Reims, Two Anointings

p4

Odo: The Robertian King and the War of Prestige (888–898) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

The year 888 is a laboratory of legitimacy. Odo is not a Carolingian, so he must prove he is king “by right”, but also king “by capacity”.

👑 29 February 888: Compiègne

On 29 February 888, Odo is elected and anointed at Compiègne, at the abbey of Saint‑Corneille. The gesture is political: the great men favour a recognised war leader (hero of Paris’s defence) rather than a Carolingian heir judged too young.

⛪ 13 November 888: Reims

Odo remains contested. To broaden his support base, he obtains backing from Arnulf of Carinthia (East Francia). This leads to a second anointing at Reims on 13 November 888, with a strengthened ritual and royal insignia.

🧠 Key takeaways

  • 888 shows kingship is a balance: election, anointing, alliances.
  • Two anointings signal disputed legitimacy and a coalition to consolidate.
  • West Francia enters a period where military effectiveness weighs heavily.
