Odo: The Robertian King and the War of Prestige (888–898) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES
Under Odo, fighting Vikings is not only about protection: it is also about governing. In a fragile kingdom, victory is a political resource.
Soon after his accession, Odo wins a victory against Northmen at Montfaucon, in the Argonne forest (24 June 888). The message is clear: an elected king must quickly prove he can defend.
In 892, Odo wins another victory near Montpensier, in the Limagne. The episode confirms a logic: facing mobile raids, central power depends on reaction capacity and regional alliances.
