Odo: The Robertian King and the War of Prestige (888–898) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES
Odo’s death closes a decade of political experimentation: a Robertian king, elected by the great men, held the kingdom despite raids and rivalries. But his reign also leaves a landscape durably transformed.
Odo dies on 3 January 898 at La Fère. His disappearance removes the pivot of a coalition built around his person and military prestige.
After 898, the great men recognise Charles the Simple. This Carolingian return is not “turning back the clock”: the decade has shown the crown can be contested, and kingship depends on the ability to negotiate with regional powers.
Even if he does not found an immediately continuous dynasty, Odo opens a path: the rise of the Robertians, who become decisive in the 10th century and prepare the Capetian accession.
