922: Election and Anointing of Robert I

p4

Robert I: The Robertian King of Civil War (922–923) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

In 922, a coalition of princes breaks obedience to Charles the Simple. Choosing a new king shows that the crown has become, in practice, conditional: a sovereign must be accepted, supported, and capable of governing.

📅 29–30 June 922

Robert is elected on 29 June 922, then anointed on 30 June at Reims by Walter, archbishop of Sens. The act is a signal: election and anointing remain essential, but they only matter if they rest on a solid coalition.

🧠 Key takeaways

  • Changing kings is a decision made by the great men.
  • 922 confirms coalition monarchy: the king reigns as long as he holds the balance.
