954: Lothair, a Carolingian Under Supervision

p4

Louis IV \"d’Outremer\": Carolingian Return and the Princes’ War (936–954) · EARLY MIDDLE AGES

On 10 September 954, Louis IV dies by accident at Reims. The question is not only “who is the heir?”, but “who accepts to make him king?”.

🧩 Dynastic continuity, continuity of control

Louis’s son Lothair is anointed and the Carolingian dynasty continues. But, as in 936, the anointing occurs in a world where the great men — especially Hugh the Great — remain arbiters of political play.

🧠 Key takeaways

  • 954 confirms kingship’s dependence on aristocratic acceptance.
  • Succession does not erase coalitions: it recomposes them.
